Entry from: La Paz, Bolivia Entry Title: "Biking the Death Road" Entry: "We got into La Paz last night after spending a fun filled day on buses and boats crossing the border from Peru to Bolivia. Our hotel here is very nice and acts like an oasis in an otherwise crazy city. The best way to describe La Paz is that it feels very real when you´re walking around. There are Bolivians everywhere going about their daily life and many of the women are still dressed in the traditional skirts and bowler hats. The streets are narrow, the buildings tall and run down, and every street seems to include a large hill. The central city sits at the bottom of a deep valley and the poorer areas rise up the mountains around it. Unlike most cities where the wealthy want the nice views, in La Paz it is all about being as low down as possible because the entire city is at such an altitude (3700 m I think) that the better areas of the city are at the bottom where it is easier to function. I felt like the combination of the thin air and the pollution made it very difficult to breathe. Our tour leader Barbara told us not to take our passports or cameras out with us and to basically ignore anyone claiming to be the Bolivian police because scams are common.
